How to Cite Sources

MLA Style | APA Style

One of the most important steps in writing your research paper is identifying your sources by briefly citing your sources within the text of your paper using parenthetical citations and giving a complete description of each source in a "Works Cited" page at the end of your paper. To correctly cite sources, you must follow a standard format or style. The Modern Language Association (MLA) style, one of the most widely used in high schools and colleges, is prescribed by the New York Military Academy English Department in its Format Guide for Research Papers which is based upon the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th edition) and available at the library. The following web sites give additional information and examples using MLA style.

Another format for documenting papers, especially in the social sciences, is known at APA style, published by the American Psychological Association. If your teacher specifies this format, see the examples below under APA Style.

Don't forget that you can also ask for help from your teachers or the librarian.
