New York Military Academy Archives

An Online Archives Exhibit

Picture postcards began appearing in the late 19th century and derive from the pre-stamped postal cards that the United States Postal Service began issuing in 1873. During the "Private Mailing Card" period, 1898-1901, messages were not allowed on the back of the card, so a small space was left on the front (see the first card below). Starting in 1907, the back of the card was divided, permitting the message to be written on the left side, while the right side was used for the address. With this change, the picture could now cover the entire front of the card. The images included here are a selection from the postcard collection held by the NYMA Archives.
